watercolor on Saunders Waterford paper
28.5 x 19cm. I was inspired by a bouquet of sunflowers that were given to my daughter for her birthday. I set out to try to capture their golden beauty. The flowers have been placed in a crock called, "pignata." This crock is meant to be place in the embers of a fire oven. It is used to slow cook everything from beans to stews to ragu's and soups - part of "la cucina antica" - the ancient way of cooking. The "pignata" is the ancestor of today's crock pot with a design, a a double handle to make it easier to move within the oven. The utility that hasn't changed since the days of the Roman Empire.
