This interesting door knocker attracted my attention while walking near the Spanish Steps in Rome. Can’t help but wonder why the two little baby figures are holding up the monstrous head. It really makes one question one’s motives before knocking on the door. It was a challenging subject partly because of the symmetry of the two little child figures, the texture of the brass and the mediocre cell phone image. It took me a while to draw it out but once I started adding the paint I did enjoy the process as it slowly unfolded. • Created with artist quality pigments on 100% cotton, acid-free, Arches paper.

These paintings are inspired by my view from my terrace in Rome. During the summer months I draw much inspiration from this outdoor space to the point that it ends up being my home studio. Especially because I live in a crowded city, it is the closest I have to being in a garden. I painted from direct observation over various painting sessions. I choose to work at around the same time of the day to ensure the natural light would be similar to that of the day before.
